I like to think of myself not quite a fashion-savvy person, but a person that cares about styles. I definitely do a lot of online fashion browsing. My style throughout the years has changed, I always cared enough about clothes and fashion just to look presentable. As I’ve grown older, my style is chic, buying with purpose instead of wasteful, and having an interest with the latest trends.
However, there is one area where I have always struggled: travel fashion where I’m not overpacking. I’ve never travelled with a backpack or carry-on for an extended amount of time.
My decision to travel with only a backpacking across Europe is because I believe its the best way to cut cost down in having to pay for checked in bags on flights, buses, and trains. The thought of trying to be fashionable while lugging around a backpack or carry-on has always been a deterrent. I don’t want my sense of fashion to hold me back from experiencing all that Europe has to offer, so I’ve decided to figure out how to be fashionable while traveling with a backpack/carry-on this summer.
In this article, I will share my tips and tricks for travel fashion so that you can feel confident and stylish while on your adventure. So, let’s get started.
Here are the tips I have compiled after doing extensive research on the topic:
It’s easy to get caught up in the latest trends, but you have to remember there is no fashion show backpacking across Europe. You have to be practical about dressing for the weather, what time of day and season, and where you are. This might sound like common sense, but I’ve met so many people who trip over themselves trying to coordinate their outfits because they are too afraid of looking like a dork with their backpack/carry-on.
You want to look stylish, but you also want to feel comfortable. So, don’t wear anything too tight or constricting. Also, make sure your clothes will hold up well throughout your travels. If you know you’ll be hiking or walking around a lot, I would advise against packing super high heels or anything else that will give you blisters when your feet hurt after a long day of exploring.
It might be tempting to throw all your clothes into a regular backpack, but this can be disastrous when you’re trying to look fashionable while traveling with a backpack. To make it easier on yourself, I would advise buying a carry-on backpack. Choose a bag that is stylish but also practical. You want something that will be comfortable to carry around and has enough space to fit all of your belongings.
The key to packing smart is to pack light. This might seem impossible if you are used to packing for long vacations, but it is possible to pare down your belongings to the essentials. Start by making a list of everything you think you will need, and then edit it down. You might be surprised at how little you need. In addition, be sure to choose versatile items that can be mixed and matched to create different looks.
Accessories can be one of the best ways to make your outfits feel more polished and put together while traveling. Choose scarves, sunglasses, hats, jewelry, or handbags that reflect your style and enhance whatever outfit you are wearing at the moment. With these tips in mind, you will look fashionable even as you navigate crowded streets or haul your backpack from city to city.
This is probably the most important tip of all when being fashionable while traveling with a backpack. You want to have a handbag that is both stylish and practical. It should be big enough to fit your essentials but not so big that it becomes a nuisance to carry around. I would recommend choosing a sturdy bag, such as leather or canvas, in a classic style that will look good for years to come.

You should do a run-through of your packing list and double-check that you have everything you need before leaving for your trip. Lay everything on the floor and go through each item one by one. Depending on your travel plans and goals (business, sightseeing in Europe, a lazy beach vacation), your list might differ, but some of the most basic items you should remember to pack include a phone charger and adapter, maps/planning apps for your phone, lip balm, sunscreen, hats/scarves, and of course your passport!
There is no need to be afraid of looking like a tourist when traveling with a backpack. You can still be fashionable, even when carrying all your belongings on your back. With a little bit of planning and the right attitude, you can rock the backpack look and feel confident and stylish no matter where your travels take you.
One of the best things about traveling in cooler weather is the opportunity to break out all your cute fall and winter clothes. And layering is key when it comes to looking fashionable while traveling. Not only will layers keep you warm on chilly days, but they can also add visual interest to your outfits. When layering clothing, be sure to choose different items in texture and color for the best effect.
In addition to following these tips, it is helpful to keep an eye out for the latest trends and styles among travelers you see on your journey. You can get inspiration from high-end and low-end fashion magazines while you are packing for your trip, or you can follow fashion bloggers and Instagram influencers who always post pictures of their outfits while traveling.
