It’s no secret that wellness is cherished around the world. For centuries, spas have been a retreat away from the stress of life, and every country has its interpretation of relaxation.
Throughout history, cultures worldwide have developed unique spa treatments that are rooted in centuries of tradition, and combine natural elements like water, herbs, and minerals to achieve a deep state of relaxation. Examples would be mud baths in early Rome or milk and honey soaks in Egypt.
One of my favorite things to do while traveling is to indulge in spa treatments! I find it interesting and rather unique to experience different treatments worldwide. So, with that being said, let’s dive into 11 of the world’s most unique spa treatments.
The Blue Lagoon’s Geothermal Spa Treatment
This spa is one of the most iconic natural wonders in the world and it’s actually quite close to Reykjavik. The thermal baths are rich in minerals like silica and sulfur; hence the milky blue color of the water. These minerals are great for the skin and can help your skin battle the effects of the cold, windy, Icelandic weather.
When you arrive, make sure to head up to the face mask bar in the lagoon. There are four options; the lava scrub, silica mud mask, and algae mask. All have amazing benefits and can help rejuvenate dry or sensitive skin.
Turkish Bath (Hammam)
Turkish baths, sometimes referred to as “hammams” are an ancient bathing method originating in Rome. The tradition actually stems from Byzantine-Roman bathhouses but is more Ottoman style. A traditional Hammam will get you cleaner than you’ve ever been before. You’ll start by sitting in a hot sauna, before a steam bath/massage. Right before your massage, you will be scrubbed and slapped around and all of your dead skin will start peeling off. Finally, you’ll be rinsed off in either cold or warm water.
Once you’re done, you’ll feel the cleanest you’ve ever felt in your life. I would recommend bringing a clean change of clothes, so you’re completely clean.
Ayurvedic Massage India
Ayurvedic massage, or Abhyanga, is an ancient healing practice that originates in the 5,000-year-old tradition of Ayurveda, which is India’s holistic system of medicine. This massage therapy consists of warm herbal oils, selected based on one’s dosha (body constitution), to balance the body, mind, and spirit. The oil is massaged deeply into the skin to improve circulation, detoxify the body, and nourish the soul.
Ayurvedic massage is widely available across the country and will cost you anywhere from $3 -$150 depending on the service you choose and where you choose to get your massage.
Taiwanese Knife Massage
“Dao Liao,” or Taiwanese Knife Massage is a 2,000-year-old practice, meant to stimulate blood flow and circulation within the body. This massage originates from Chinese martial arts and uses blunt knives to deliver rhythmic, gentle tapping on the body. Though it may sound intimidating, the knives are never sharp and are used to stimulate acupressure points, promote the release of blocked energy and, fully relieve tension in the body.
Traditionally, knife massage was practiced by Buddhist monks to cleanse negative energy and relax tense muscles. Today, it’s increasingly popular in Taiwanese spas, where it’s used for massage. I highly recommend trying this treatment in Taipei as there are lots of shops available and for a good price.
Egyptian Snake Massage
Likely one of the most unique treatments on the list, the Egyptian snake massage is an ancient spa treatment that has recently gained attention for its unique therapeutic benefits. It originates in ancient Egypt and involves placing non-venomous snakes on the body so they slither gently across the skin. The owner of the spa says the treatment reduces muscle tension and relaxes the body.
Historically, Egyptians revered snakes for their ability to renew and shed their skin. This became a symbol of rebirth and regeneration. It is believed that ancient Egyptians may have used this snake massage treatment as a way to relax and decompress.
Definitely a unique and interesting wellness treatment to try if you’re brave enough.
Dead Sea Soak & Scrub, Jordan
The Dead Sea Soak & Scrub is a spa treatment unlike any other and it’s one known for its miracle healing properties. The Dead Sea is the world’s saltiest body of water and over the years, many have been attracted to its healing properties. Even that of Cleopatra, who set up one of the world’s first beauty spas right along the Dead Sea! When you soak, you’re immersing yourself in mineral-rich waters. These minerals include magnesium, potassium, and calcium, which help soothe aching muscles, clean the skin, and promote relaxation.
The scrub uses salt and mud from the sea itself. This helps gently exfoliate to remove dead skin cells which will leave your skin feeling super soft. You might even glow too. If you plan to travel to Jordan, I highly recommend this treatment.
Smoke Sauna, Finland
The Savusauna is a traditional Finnish spa treatment that differs from other saunas. Unlike modern saunas, a smoke sauna doesn’t have a chimney. Instead, wood is burned for several hours on a stove, and the room is filled with smoke. Once the fire goes out and the smoke is cleared, the room retains a soft heat. This process is what creates a Finnish Smoke Sauna.
Historically, the sauna was not just a place to cleanse the body but also to relax. Many Finns even believed it had healing powers and would visit a few times a week. I wish I could visit a Finnish Sauna a few times a week. I found that the gentle heat helped me detoxify my body. All in all, I would highly recommend this spa treatment when visiting Finland.
Snail Facial, Japan
The Snail Facial is a natural spa treatment from Japan that has recently gained a lot of attention; mainly for its potential benefits. The practice can be traced back to ancient farming methods in Japan where it was believed that snail secretion helped heal and regenerate plant tissue.
Over time, these properties were believed to benefit human skin, which is what led to the development of the Snail Facial. During the treatment, live snails are placed on the skin, which leaves behind a trail of mucus, rich in proteins, antioxidants, and hyaluronic acid.
This slime is said to deeply hydrate, stimulate collagen production, and improve skin elasticity, so it is highly efficient as an anti-aging treatment. The practice also promotes cell regeneration and reduces the appearance of scars and wrinkles. So, if you can get passed the idea of snail mucus on your skin, I recommend this treatment.
Healing Salt Caves, Greece
Believe it or not, salt is very therapeutic, especially in the form of halotherapy, which has been used in Greece for thousands of years. This practice dates back to the time of Hippocrates (the father of medicine) who discovered the benefits of salt air for respiratory issues. Modern salt caves do their best to replicate natural salt mines, where tiny salt particles are sprayed into the air to help detoxify the environment. This is very helpful in terms of clearing the respiratory system or even improving skin conditions like eczema.
Seaweed Body Wrap
A Seaweed Body Wrap is an ancient coastal treatment that is meant to help rejuvenate dry skin. This treatment is believed to be from ancient Rome but experts aren’t entirely sure. It involves applying blended, warmed seaweed to the skin, followed by wrapping the body in a thermal blanket and larger seaweed slices.
Seaweed itself is rich in minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants that are absorbed by the skin. This helps detoxify the body, improve circulation, and deeply hydrate the skin. It is also believed to reduce inflammation and promote relaxation. I highly recommend trying this treatment in Italy, Greece, or Turkey, as that’s where the treatment is thought to have originated.
African Bush-Spa Therapy
Another very unique treatment, African Bush-Spa therapy is a proven healing treatment that combines the use of Indigenous herbs, essential oils like Shea butter or Baobab oil, and even mud treatments that are derived from the African terrain. These ingredients are applied during soothing massages and rituals to help promote relaxation and reduce inflammation throughout the body.
Here’s some of the best options to experience true African Bush-Spa therapy:

Madikwe Safari Lodge (South Africa)
Jabulani Safari Lodge (South Africa)
